Jif Peanut Butter Commercial

In this plot, we have a mom trying to resolve a dispute between her two kids, Jake and Cody, and the last slice of bread.

The mom said, "... We’ll cut it in half."
Cody said, "His half can’t be bigger than mine!"
The mom said, "... Jake gets to cut."
Jake said, "Yes!" ... and he cuts a big piece for himself.
The mom said, "But ... Cody gets to choose."

Jake is not happy about this new information ... and passes the plate.

Cody said, "Nice" ... and after a moment, he takes bigger piece for himself.
Cody said, "I got a pretty big half!"

The idea of "You cut, I choose" is a fair solution. But, what went wrong in the plot described above?
